He Works While She Learns
He told the dude that he didn’t wear girls shirts to work. He wasn’t wasting his best stuff to work in this dust bowl environment. His good shirts he wore when he went out with his girlfriend. Why impress these guys at work who didn’t exactly come off as fashionistas themselves.
So he drove the fork lift up and down the rows. He picked up whatever the boss man said to pick up. He didn’t like it but a guys gotta eat.
He stopped for breakfast every morning. He liked waffles and breakfast sausage. For lunch he ate a single sandwich. Dinner was big. Sometimes he went with the guys to a burger joint.
Day after day he picked orders and drove them down the line to where they were prepared for delivery or pick up. Who got a new leather couch and love seat today? Who got a new dining room set?
He was smart, but there were no opportunities in this small town. There were no better jobs. He needed to make a drastic change if he wanted to secure his future and grow financially.
Already halfway through his twenties, he was primed to succeed. His girl had an eternity ring, now she should be getting a diamond engagement ring. He didn’t need to impress her exactly. He did, however, need to grab hold of a future for himself and take her along with him.
He saw her waiting for him outside their favorite Mexican restaurant. They planned dinner together. Her brown suede boots were perfectly matched to her brown suede hobo bag. She smiled gently at him as they walked into the restaurant.
Sitting in a booth, they sipped Margaritas and waited for the taco salads to be prepared. Both loved Mexican food. They followed a pretty healthy regimen.
She told him about a professor who stared at all the girls legs as he lectured. He told her how his boss got a box dropped on his foot in the afternoon. She earned top grades and planned her career. She never took her attention away from him however.
He enjoyed their time together and they shared everything. He had funny anecdotes, she had academic stories. They had fun, but, she wished he could join her in the academic world she was involved in.
