Dont Ignore that Online Dating Wink!

Missy,

I’m using the online dating service Match.com as a starting place to find a relationship after being a midlife single for five years. It’s OK, but I just need to vent about the whole winking thing!

I can’t figure out what’s wrong with people!  I don’t ask for much.  Match is set up so that if you’re interested in someone, you “wink” at them (it basically just sends them an email telling them your interested.)  But, people don’t respond – Hell, I’d be happy if the people I wink at could just click on the “no thanks” button if they aren’t interested when I wink at them!  I’m really getting irritated with that.  I winked at about half dozen this weekend AND I actually took the half-second it takes to hit the “no thanks” button for the winks I received that just didn’t seem compatible for me.  I guess I really am attracted to a bunch of assholes!

Oh my!  Sounds like this is a problem that many people may not have considered.

If someone winks at you, that means they found something in your profile that they liked.  They took the time to look, check out the picture, and carefully read your profile.

In my opinion, winking is kind of like asking someone to dance.  You get up enough courage to ask the question. The other person has the right to say Yes or No, depending on their first impression of you.  However, the other person does NOT just stand there and look straight ahead, not answering.  It’s just not a polite thing to do.

So, when you’re using an online dating service, remember that there are real people involved.  If you get a wink, and you’re not interested, just click on the “no thanks” button.  At least the person will know that you received the wink; took a look at their online personal, and have made a decision.

Somehow, it’s better to get a No, than the silent treatment.
