Online dating has become a phenomenal success. Over forty million people date online now and that number grows daily. If you’re dating over 40 – or at any age really, it’s a fun and exciting way to meet lots of new people, broaden your horizons and hopefully with a little luck, find your one-and-only. But there are some things you need to do right in order to succeed with online dating:

Simply surviving the online dating scene when dating over 40 mostly requires the same practices as surviving the real world dating scene.

Be honest about yourself! You’ve heard it over and over again but it can’t be stressed enough. Honesty really IS the best policy. When you fill out your profile, state your REAL age (not just that you’re dating over 40) and your REAL weight and your REAL height. Lying won’t do you any good.

If you do find someone you are interested in, you will have to meet them face to face sooner or later anyway and they will know with a glance whether you were honest or lied through your teeth. Lying is a BIG TURN OFF.

Second – post a natural looking picture.  There isn’t much point in posting a picture of your gorgeous or handsome best friend. She or he isn’t the one looking for their soul mate; you are. The thing is beauty really is in the eye of the beholder. What is considered unattractive in some places and to some people is considered VERY attractive in other places and to other people.

Third – be honest about your level of preferred activity.  If you are really a couch potato and absolutely despise all things that relate to nature and include bugs you can identify and discomforts you aren’t willing to endure, say so. Don’t claim to be a snow board enthusiast or an expert at hang gliding. You will meet someone who really IS a snow board enthusiast or a hang gliding expert and they will immediately know that you are neither.

Remember, you are NOT the only person out there who doesn’t enjoy some outside activities so it does you no good to lie here.  You will be much better when dating over 40 to just let go of everything, and tell the truth.  After all, maybe someone who doesn’t enjoy the great outdoors is actually a GREAT COOK! You just never know.
